A selection of Scholars and Trustees at a recent event in the City.
The Mansion House Scholarship Scheme (MHSS) awards scholarships to students and business executives at an early stage of their careers. Scholars are funded to study or undertake training or work experience in the financial services sector within the UK.
The Scheme was established during Sir Richard Nichols’ mayoralty in 1997/98. Sir Richard was the first Lord Mayor of the City of London to act as Patron of the Scheme for the full term of his mayoralty and he made the first two awards, appointing Mansion House Scholars from Vietnam and Thailand, following visits to both countries. The Scheme was registered with the Charity Commission in 2001. Since its inception the Scheme has awarded 208 scholarships to applicants from 70 countries, 35 of which are defined as developing by the OECD.
Scholars have traditionally been selected from some of the countries which the Lord Mayors visit in their roles as international ambassadors for the UK’s financial services sector. Awards vary in size but are in the region of £10,000 and are restricted to those applying to study or to undertake training in the financial services sector or in related subjects. The majority of our Scholars take a Master’s degree at a UK university, while others attend professional training courses or business attachments within the City of London. During their time in the UK they meet members of the City’s financial community and attend at least one of the formal events hosted at Mansion House by the Lord Mayor. They develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the City and more widely in the UK.
In 2019 we appointed our first Scholar from within the UK, following an initiative launched by Sir Charles Bowman as Lord Mayor when he visited Sheffield. Five further UK-based Scholars have since been appointed from Belfast, Bristol, Cardiff, Chester and Edinburgh, each with the assistance of a regional Livery Company or Guild. The Trustees hope to expand the scope of the Scheme by inviting further applications through the regional Guilds, thus strengthening the links between the City of London and other business centres within the UK.
The Scheme is funded primarily by donations from the City of London. Over half the 110 City Livery Companies now support the Scheme, reinforcing the link between the Livery, the Mayoralty and the financial services sector. We also receive an annual donation from the Lord Mayor’s Appeal, and have an agreement with the Al-Sabah Foundation in Kuwait to fund two scholars from the Arab world annually over three years.
The funding available through the Livery Companies is limited, we therefore are actively seeking support from individuals and commercial organisations and firms connected to the City of London. Please do consider making a donation by clicking on the ‘Donate’ button within the ‘Funding’ section of this site.
